  • Meal kits are making a comeback after years of faltering sales. People stuck at home because of the coronavirus pandemic are cooking more. Some are avoiding supermarkets.
  • That dynamic is juicing up demand for the packs of pre-apportioned fresh ingredients, reversing a period of slower growth for the decade-old industry that was seeming like a fad.
  • U.S. customers spent around $100 million on meal kits at retail stores in the month ending April 11, nearly double that period a year prior, according to Nielsen.
  • Online meal-kit sales grew 63% in the week ending April 15 from the previous year’s period, according to an analysis of transactions by Earnest Research.
  • Sun Basket said weekly sales have almost doubled weekly. Home Chef’s new customer count has nearly tripled over the past six weeks.

  • As the coronavirus began to spread across the United States, shoppers stocked up on toilet paper and canned food.
  • Then, as restaurants closed and simply venturing out became a health hazard, people began cooking more meals at home.
  • These trends have had profound implications for companies like Blue Apron, which sends meal kits to more than 350,000 subscribers, and Thrive Market, an online provider of healthy foods and eco-friendly home cleaning products with more than 800,000 members.
  • Both companies have been scrambling to keep up with the crushing demand while tending to the sanitizing of their fulfillment centers, a wave of new hiring and a supply chain in flux.

Americans keep clicking to buy, minting new online shopping winners

  • Nytimes

  • Online sales in the United States have surged in recent weeks, after shelter-in-place measures enacted in March shuttered brick-and-mortar stores throughout the country.
  • Big and sometimes unexpected winners have emerged in several of the industries that have come to define the coronavirus economy, according to data from Earnest Research, which tracks millions of credit and debit card transactions in the United States.
  • Instacart is the clear winner among online grocery shopping companies followed by Amazon, Target and Walmart.
  • This grocery battle is part of a much bigger push by Target and Walmart to take on the behemoth of online shopping, Amazon. Both companies have recently expanded their online sales much faster than Amazon.
  • The crisis has also given a shot in the arm to online restaurant and meal delivery services, which were broadly experiencing slower growth earlier this year. The companies delivering meals are now chasing DoorDash.
  • GameStop, on the other hand, was a much smaller player going in — but the one thing people can’t seem to get enough of during these days at home is video games.
  • One of the few apparel companies that have been doing well, at least online, is Lululemon, thanks to its generous selection of the sweatpants and leggings that serve as particularly good work clothes when your office is in the basement.
