As Head of Quality Engineering, your role will be to establish Benchling’s quality function within engineering. At Benchling, quality is embedded within the engineering organization at the product-team level. I.e. quality is owned by everyone with an automation-first mindset.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

* You will be responsible for hiring software automation and quality infrastructure engineers that reside within engineering sprint teams and embody this automation-first mindset. You will provide cross-team direction on requirements, technology, and practices for quality that scale as Benchling’s organization and product/tech stack grows. In establishing quality as an embedded function, the right leader will be comfortable running a matrixed organization and partnering closely with development managers to ensure quality engineers have clear objectives, technical guidance, and deliverables.
* You will also be responsible for establishing a technical roadmap of the investments required in quality infrastructure, tools, automation frameworks, processes, and reports required to continuously improve Benchling’s product quality. You should be comfortable in assessing and making build vs. buy decisions on technology and negotiating & driving any selected vendors for tools or resources.
* Benchling operates a customer success team of scientists responsible for deployment and configuration of Benchling’s product in enterprise accounts. The Head of Quality Engineering will be responsible for establishing clear lines of communication and processes for handling inbound and outbound defects between the customer success and engineering organization. You may also have to engage directly with enterprise customers from time-to-time to ensure a high degree of confidence is established in Benchling’s attention to quality.

 

YOU

* Benchling requires the establishment of GxP compliance, which in turn will drive greater revenue opportunities for the company. As the Head of Quality Engineering, you will be instrumental in helping establish and achieve a GxP-compliant SDLC alongside a modern cloud CI/CD SDLC. This entails a very mature set of requirements and test traceability, and a customer-facing UAT suite. In order to accomplish this, you will work closely with engineering and product leaders, and partner across other teams including Customer Success and Sales, to interface with customers.
* Being the first hire in quality engineering, you will need to embed yourself across engineering to quickly establish the strategy, roadmap, and hiring objectives for the function. The right person has the dynamic range to operate as team of 1 and grow the team to ~7-10 people over the coming 18 months.
