Over the next 10 years, biotech will fundamentally rewrite the way we live. Gene editing and cell therapy will dramatically change how we treat cancer and other major illnesses. Biofuels and biomaterials will transform the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, and the makeup of everyday objects. Crop science and synthetic biology will produce sustainable and ethical food. Benchling’s mission is to accelerate the research that propels us towards this future, and magnify its impact, through modern software.

Every day, scientists around the world use Benchling in their efforts to solve humanity's most pressing problems. For these scientists, Benchling is the central technology they use to conduct their research.

Benchling was founded by a team of MIT graduates and has raised funding from Benchmark, Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, and Y Combinator. Our customers include pharmaceutical giants, leading biotechs, and the world's most renowned research institutes.

As Head of R&D Operations, your role will be to drive the effectiveness and efficiency of our R&D organization across engineering, product, and design (i.e. EPD). You will report to the VP of Engineering and be a trusted partner in defining objectives, strategy, tactics, and in developing processes that scale. In doing so, you will work closely with the EPD team to establish credibility and trust at the “grass roots” level of the team. The role of operations is one where you have to enable the team to efficiently deliver products, surface risks, and make decisions; all without the authority of managing the engineers and designers.

Benchling requires the establishment of GxP compliance, which in turn will drive greater revenue opportunities for the company. As the Head of R&D Operations, you will be responsible for defining the entire set of work required to establish a GxP-compliance SDLC alongside a modern cloud CI/CD SDLC. In addition, the R&D operations team will own the necessary tools, processes, compliance sign-off, and customer interface from within EPD. In order to accomplish this, you will work closely with engineering and product leaders, and partner across other teams including Customer Success and Sales, to interface with customers.

Benchling operates a customer-facing development team, Customer Engineering, that handles custom application and integrations on the platform. You will be responsible for supporting project costing, creating 2 (or 3 party) project plans, and customer & vendor-facing updates/tracking. As Benchling’s ecosystem strategy gets defined, you will be instrumental in setting up the developer partner-facing interfaces, process, and support.

As the Head of R&D Operations, you will be responsible for interfacing with finance & HR to ensure that EPD is planning, tracking, and aligned with the yearly financial plans.

Being the first hire in R&D operations, you will have to operate hands-on and hire the necessary team alongside R&D growth.

* Run the roadmap planning process
* Own and evolve the weekly operational review across R&D and Customer Success
* Own the infrastructure, e.g. Jira, Quip knowledge-base, etc. related to engineering, product & design. Partner with EPD and CS leaders to ensure it is configured and setup for our processes.
* Establish the key operational reports and metrics we need to track at a scrum-level, department-level, and cross-department.
* Own & evolve all the necessary planning and engineering execution artifacts, i.e. project plans, resource tracking/allocation, status, etc.
* Be a champion and educator of pragmatic, agile-scrum practices as new people join the team.
* Work with CS leadership to establish a tiered support structure, with tier 3 being serviced by engineering.
* Establish our GxP program
* Partner with Head of Platform Engineering on incident response and infrastructure cost tracking
* Create reports to track financial & HR metrics for EPD

* Empower through information. We explain the “why” behind every decision, unless there are highly sensitive circumstances. We're honest about how we're doing, especially in difficult times. We believe that sharing information builds trust and enables better decision-making.
* Rely on tenacity. Hard work is one of the greatest factors to determine success and is fully under our control. We must make the most of every day by bringing the highest level of determination. Dreaming big is not enough.
* Raise the bar. Pushing ourselves and others to improve will be uncomfortable and at times result in failure. However, it's critical to our success. We're dedicated to creating a place where everyone feels challenged to improve.
* Build a lever. We choose to build tools and infrastructure that will help others make world-changing innovations. There's less glory in it, but in the words of Archimedes, "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world."

* Beautiful, light-filled office in the Financial District of SF
* Monthly health & wellness stipend (up to $100/month on a gym membership, running shoes, or even a massage)
* Work with a talented yet humble team
* Meals and snacks covered
* 401k
* Medical, dental, and vision insurance
* Commuter benefits
* Happy hours, company and team wide social events

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
