A Smart Assistant in the Electronic Health Record

What We do
We're a small, mission-driven team, determined to improve health care at a massive scale. This comes with particular challenges.
The current EMR landscape is incredibly fractured. Competing systems don't communicate, have data in inconsistent or conflicting forms, and often have unreliable or insufficiently documented APIs. Part of our work is making these systems work together seamlessly. Experience building and improving distributed systems.
A perfect data platform doesn't matter if practitioners can't or won't use it. We're building tools that are easy to use, easy to understand, and make less work for our customers, not more. This is a critical issue in medical software, where many systems increase doctor's administrative burden(https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/11/12/why-doctors-hate-their-computers) and can lead to life-threatening errors(https://khn.org/news/death-by-a-thousand-clicks/).
We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with access to this critical medical data.
What's a normal day like?
While we plan on building our development team here in Baltimore, we are a distributed team. We use Notion, Slack, and Zoom to keep everyone in sync. While we are predominantly in the office, we have a flexible remote work policy.
The Avhana platform is built with Ruby on Rails and React.
Our rules engine is powered by Drools, a Java-based business rule management system.
We're hosted on Aptible, which is a Heroku-like platform for secure, compliant applications.
What We'd Like to See in You
An ideal candidate should have experience working on production Rails and React codebases. Similar experience is welcome.
We're a small team, and you'll need to be able to work quickly and independently. Experience working in large codebases is crucial — our codebase mirrors the complexity of health care.
Empathy is a key quality here. We aren't looking for "rock stars", we want team players. Effective communication and being able to understand the needs of our customers is vital to our shared success.
Bonus points if you have strong design skills, and the ability to translate that into maintainable HTML and CSS (We use a mix of HAML templates, React components and SASS for our markup).
- Unlimited paid leave. Most people take 2-4 weeks a year.
- Medical insurance.. We cover 90% of your premiums.
