After years of major gift freelance work across Texas, I incorporated as a one-person company. My work is broadly focused on developing and implementing major gift campaigns,...more managing communications and public relations. Having worked on "challenged" major gift campaigns (some in remote areas with little or no staffing), I have become more focused, self reliant and tech savvy. Those same skills have helped several startups since I returned to Austin in 2013!
Idea Developer, Tumblr · Basically, there's a lot of important history lying literally underneath and within our inner-city cemeteries. The native… · More plant restoration movement has grown strong in Texas, with an eye to water conservation (top priority in Texas). Why not engage the Wildflower Center, TPWD, NRDC and other partners to develop native plant stocks appropriate for Austin. Re-design our historic cemeteries with natives; create solar shaded information stations; ask Google to micro-map key grave sites; hire historians to outline the history of the city's forefathers and mothers for online access and GPS locating (using Google micro-mapping for onsite walking tours), create websites for educational information, encourage heritage tourism and incorporation of cemeteries into school history classes, revitalize surrounding neighborhoods with new businesses catering to visitors, promote/market each project. This project would reduce water usage (Texas' #1 conservation priority); provide jobs for historians and native plant growers/sellers; it would encourage a new type of tourism; educate citizens of all ages about regional history; provide new curricula for K-12 and students of all ages; involve landscape architects and web developers; draw-in the religious community (many own the cemeteries but cannot afford maintenance); and more.
I was part of a team of founders of a project called South Texas Natives, a native plant restoration project focusing on South Texas ranches. It was based at TAMUK and involved TXDoT (ca. 2001-2003). When living in San Antonio years later, the idea came upon me while visiting historic cemeteries - many of which have lovely monuments but which are not well kept - that they could be landscaped beautifully with water-saving native plants. Idea generator, Microsoft Word, Social Media Platform · This national fine art print project involves enlisting the talents of well known artists to… · More produce a high-end boxed set of fine art prints. Sale proceeds would support the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas, a hotbed of butterfly activity in the Northern Hemisphere. The Center needs ongoing financial support to operate and expand on-the-ground habitat for butterflies along the Rio Grande. Funding would be needed to launch the project, which involves engaging artists and professional partners, filming the artists speaking about the project and their printmaking activities on behalf of the project, filming staff at the Center and founder Jeffrey Glassberg of the North American Butterfly Association discussing butterfly ecology and the Center, developing the boxed set itself in terms of design (with possibly a well-known author introduction), the development of a traveling exhibition (including educational components about art, printmaking, butterflies, and conservation), and the like. This will result in a traveling exhibition, documentary, public speaking engagements and income generation for the Center in Mission, Texas. This project is high visibility, educational, and it would be ideal for a sponsor(s) interested in supporting conservation and being associated with a very high class enterprise. Photo comes from the Center website: https://www.nationalbutterflycenter.org/nbc-multi-media/in-the-news/186-rio-grande-valley-resident-wins-north-american-butterfly-photo-contest.
I came up with the idea originally, fleshed out the basics, and enlisted the involvement of Mark L. Smith. Mark has moved to Johnson City and purchased an art gallery there, which would be an ideal center for print project activities.
Bring Postcode Lottery to U.S. with Texas as Test Ground
I came up with the idea · During a conference in San Diego ca. 2008, a nonprofit CEO in The Netherlands mentioned to me the highly successful Postcode… · More Lottery in Europe, from which his nonprofit was receiving funding. Having worked in the nonprofit field in America for many years and knowing from traditional funders that as nonprofits proliferate in America, there is more competition for funding: we need new funding sources. Simultaneously, our Texas Lottery continues to come under fire for being sleazy, while the Postcode Lottery in Europe is high minded and it has a more ethical image. The aim is NOT to reinvent the wheel, but to engage the founders and managers of the Postcode Lottery in Europe to come to Texas and see if some kind of Texas Postcode Lottery could be implemented. It will require legislative work, review of existing laws, greater understanding about how the European programs work (staffing and ongoing management), consultation with the Texas Lottery Commission, and how to market to an entire populace to get the citizenry to buy-in (literally). Some initial funding is needed to start researching the concept for America, however.
Developer, WordPress, Whatsapp, Skype · This partnership will enable American philanthropists to support urgent conservation needs in the Tuscany… · More region of Italy.
I came up with the idea of fundraising in the United States on behalf of Italy, for urgent conservation needs in the Tuscany region. Mauro Bartalini is my colleague on the ground in Milan, Italy (Italian by birth, longtime resident of Milan, extensive planning experience). In brief, we envision a lean, modern approach that focuses intently on prospect identification and gift solicitation, and it involves a trusted international banking partner (currently being sought), and on-the-ground oversight so that timelines are met. Donor reporting, careful stewardship of all gifts, and onsite special tours and benefits will accrue to donors. Once a banking partner is secured, we will fundraise to enable Carolyn and Mauro to work full-time on Artfuel for at least six months. Three project budgets are forthcoming from the head of the Art Ministry, Tuscany Branch (check the website for details). If successful, we envision continuing forward with Arfuel to fund other projects and perhaps other worthy projects in other countries. What I Do
I am a fundraising and communications expert with more than 20 years of experience. Principally, I design and implement major gift campaigns and manage communications programs. The past 3 years I have worked with startup nonprofits to help them ramp-up funding/credibility to secure larger donations.
Several multi-million dollar fundraising campaigns have been either designed or repaired, and completed by me. Some of these efforts were deemed "impossible." Awards for excellence in work and volunteering have come from the Dallas Zoological Society, Art Museum of South Texas, The Nature Conservancy of Texas, NTEN: Nonprofit Technology Network, the North American Butterfly Association, Rob & Bessie Welder Wildlife Conservation Foundation and BRIT: Botanical Research Institute of Texas.
A chance to make a difference using my skills, with non-profits (fundraising and communications), or for-profits (community relations and communications). My interests are global in focus. I enjoy working independently and as part of a team (when I have one).
George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution by Brian Kilmeade. My documented American Revolutionary War ancestor is discussed in the book, and I am a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution.
